What is it like to work in a biotechnology lab?

We interviewed community college grads to learn more about their work and hear about a typical day on the job.

Polly Bechtold is a graduate of the Bridge to Biosciences Program (Lab Assistant Certificate) and the Biotechnology Program (Biotechnician Certificate) of City College of San Francisco.  She currently works at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation collecting blood samples from patients and testing them for different types of infections.  She also tests samples to assess kidney and liver function and talks to patients about their health.  Read more

Mitch Kane is a graduate of the Shoreline Community College Biotechnology Lab Specialist Certificate program. He works at Fred Hutch in Seattle, WA in a lab that studies cord blood stem cells. He regularly uses skills like cell isolation, staining, and counting, prepares solutions and plans experiments.  Read more

We culture human B cells for DNA and cell lines, here I am getting ready to take these cultures for DNA. Each culture represents a unique individual and each of my technicians (and myself) tend to have anywhere from 100-150 cultures growing at any one time.

Jenna Gravley is the Research Technician Supervisor for the Research Cell Bank at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. She graduated from the Shoreline Community College Biotechnology Lab Specialist program and holds an A.S. in Biotechnology. She completed the biotechnology program at Tulsa Community College. In addition, she holds an M.S. in Natural Science, a B.S. in Molecular Biology, and an A.S. in Biotechnology. Dmitry Serbzhinsky holds a B.S. and M.S., and he completed the Biotechnology Lab Specialist program at Shoreline Community College. He now works in protein purification at the Center for Infectious Disease Research in the South Lake Union area of Seattle, WA. Dmitry describes how he uses a variety of skills for conducting cutting-edge work to isolate and characterize proteins.  Read more
