Career Description

Genomics technicians use a range of technologies related to characterizing and comparing DNA and RNA sequences.  They isolate RNA and DNA from samples and are expected to be familiar with cloning DNA and DNA sequencing.  They construct libraries, perform quality control by gel electrophoresis and UV/Vis spectroscopy, carry out titrations, and work with a variety of microarray, PCR, and DNA sequencing technologies.

Technicians may work with instruments from diverse companies.  They may construct libraries from DNA and/or RNA. They use PCR, qPCR, fluorimeters, and nanodrop spectrophotometers. For DNA sequencing or RNAseq, they may use Nanopore minions, Illumina sequencers, or instruments for Sanger sequencing. They are expected to be familiar with bioinformatics and are likely to use BLAST to search protein and/or nucleic acid databases and be able to use public databases such as those at the NCBI.

Genomics technicians are also expected to know how to use LIMS and often electronic laboratory notebooks.

Alternate job title:  Research Associate
